BASED on a stepped single level 3.5m grid, the aim was to encourage people to move rhythmically throughout the building.
An urban island, the site is located in a residential area between fast moving circulation routes.
Traditional dance schools have a clear distinction between visitors and the dancers.
The concept was to re-connect the two via the crossing of paths and sightlines. I believe for a vibrant public building the private areas shouldn’t be entirely separated.
These areas are arranged around a set of courtyards so that the visitor and dancer has ever-changing views through to the opposing side.
Activating the circulation and emphasising the tension between worlds.
